Talladega College Choir Concert Review 2007 – Written by Sherry Imswiler
Hats off to the Talladega College Choir for another sensational performance at Genesee Baptist Church. Despite the facts that their bus broke down in Alabama and they had to charter a bus – that they drove all the way to Rochester for the concert, performed at two high schools in the morning, and had to board the bus immediately after the concert in order to perform in Birmingham, Alabama the next night – they managed to pull off a truly spectacular concert. I was not only impressed with their music, but also with the level of enthusiasm, maturity and professionalism exhibited by these exemplary young adults.
Their procession into the sanctuary singing "Holy, Holy, Holy" had me in tears right off the bat. What a beautiful way to lead off a program appropriately coordinated to reflect the passionate themes of Holy Week. Malotte's "The Lord's Prayer" had me in tears again with the very next number. Two solos featuring the lovely soprano voices of students Amber Harmon and Cassie Porterfield graced a hushed audience hanging on their every note and word. These numbers were followed by two spiritual selections, perhaps my personal favorites of the night, "Witness," and "Ride On King Jesus" featuring tenor Juan Beane. Concluding the concert's first half was Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus," which moved the audience to remain on its feet throughout the entire number.
When the choir again processed down the aisle after a brief intermission, attired in gorgeous African-style robes, the atmosphere was electric, and I knew that we were in for an equally dynamic second half. Soloists Reginald Brown, Maria Sullivan, Juan Beane, Cassie Porterfield and Lena Randall were outstanding. My favorite selection in the second half was "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?" We were treated to a moving rendition of "Amazing Grace," not listed on the program, which stirred the audience's emotions once again.
To be especially commended was Choral Director Dr. Lindy G. McLeod, who not only conducted but simultaneously accompanied many of the songs. What she has done with this talented, remarkable group of students is a testament to her own untiring dedication and commitment to prove to the world how a small college choir can overcome financial and geographic obstacles to affirm God's message of hope through the power of music. An inspirational and triumphant performance!
