“Your Grace and Mercy

Invitational Hymn

Your grace and mercy brought me through,

I’m living this moment because of you

I want to thank you, and praise you, too,

Your grace and mercy brought me through.

Thank you for saving a sinner like me,

To tell the world that salvation is free.

There were times when I didn’t do right,

But you watched over me both day and night.

Dillard University Choir Concert

Dillard University Concert Choir – March 15, 2012-1
(Click link for more details)

DILLARD UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

Dillard University is a private, historically black, undergraduate institution founded in 1869.  It is among the finest small liberal arts colleges in the South.  In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated Dillard’s campus.  The flooding affected more than 80 percent of the city of New Orleans and left no corner of the historic Dillard University untouched.  It was the worst hit out of all of the colleges and universities in the area.

Our post-Katrina capital losses including infrastructure and clean-up efforts exceeded $280 million. Lost revenue from tuition and fees for the 2005-2006 academic year was over $25 million. Total damages to Dillard stretched to $400 million. Although the university had insurance, the losses were staggering. One residence hall was destroyed by fire. But the campus rebuilt as classes relocated to the New Orleans World Trade Center and a Hilton hotel.

Restoring the university’s finances, recovering the student body and managing the rebirth of the campus were monumental tasks for the team consisting of alumni, faculty, staff, and board of trustees. We all took comfort in the fact that the flood waters spared Lawless Chapel, a worship space that not only embodies our connection to the Methodist and Congregational churches, but a space where the black and white communities met and shared cultural events long before integration was codified into law. First we prayed. Then we rolled up our sleeves and got to work.

Dillard resumed classes in the spring of 2006 in temporary classrooms at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside and the World Trade Center of New Orleans.   Dillard students and faculty returned to campus in the fall of 2006. Dillard University has experienced tremendous growth and change as the work of rebuilding continues.

Dillard has long been affiliated with The United Methodist Church, receiving at one time $314,090 from the General Church for general operations.   The School has also received money through The Black College Fund of the church which helps 11 historically Black United Methodist related colleges and universities.   In 2010, Dillard earned a top 10 ranking from U.S. News & World Report among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, (HBCU).

The Institution‘s aim is to develop graduates who are broadly educated, culturally aware, concerned with improving human conditions, and able to meet competitive demands of a global and technologically advance society. Dillard School of Nursing is steeped in history and honor, as it was the first program in Louisiana to offer the baccalaureate in nursing. For more than 65 years, Dillard’s nursing program has created an environment of educational excellence both here and abroad.

On December 7, 2011, the Dillard University Choir performed in the White House where they sang in the East Wing for visitors who came to view the White House and its holiday decorations. The choir, under the direction of Professor S. Carver Davenport, will perform in Rochester, NY on March 15, 2012.
